What is an IAMSE Meeting?

What is an IAMSE Meeting?
The annual meeting for the International Association for Medical Science Educators (IAMSE) is different than other meetings you attend as it focuses on YOU the educator!  This is not just another education meeting; it is a meeting where you as an educator can network with colleagues from around the world who share your passions, concerns and ideas.
While attending the IAMSE meeting you might experience:
  • A Focus Session - a 60 or 90-minute session that is intended to “focus in” on a specific topic in small group discussion format. Groups of 10-50 individuals consider a particular topic with the aim of reaching consensus or general recommendation. Formats can be variable. For instance, the Session Leader may arrange for the pros and cons of a particular issue to be presented by a mini-panel discussion. Alternately, the group may be subdivided and certain tasks assigned to be developed for summary during the last 20-minutes of the session. Discussion and consensus/resolution is the goal, so not more than one-third of the time is to be used for formal presentation.
  • A Workshop - workshops are sessions less than three (3) hours in length with mainly “hands-on” opportunities for participants.

  • An Oral Presentation - Authors of submitted poster abstracts can be invited to present their research in an oral presentation, or presenters can be invited directly by the Program Committee. Oral presentations are 15 or 20 minutes in duration including 5 minutes for discussion with the audience.
As well as:
  • Poster Sessions
  • Plenary Talks
  • Panel Discussions
  • Roundtable Discussions
  • Opportunities to network with colleagues
  • A gala dinner (included with registration!)
The 2012 Program Committee has been working for over a year to develop the program that will be presented in Portland, Oregon next June.  Take a moment to bookmark the conference website to receive the latest session updates http://www.iamseconference.org
Mark your calendar now for June 23-26, 2012!

As a reminder!  The Call For Abstracts will open in November, watch your email for details.

Call for TOPICS and Session IDEAS - 16th Annual IAMSE Meeting

Dear Colleagues,

As we have just completed one of the most successful IAMSE meetings on record, we must now focus our thoughts toward the 2012 meeting of our Association in Portland, Oregon!

The 2012 Program Committee is already working diligently to prepare this meeting and we would appreciate your input. Through this Call for Topics and Session Ideas, we invite you to have a hand in developing the content of the meeting. Specifically, we are soliciting topics and themes you think are important to medical science educators. At our annual meeting a variety of sessions is offered, including day long Faculty Development Courses, Plenary Sessions, Focus Sessions and Workshops. We also invite you to suggest new session formats which may be of interest to our meeting.

You can submit your ideas and suggestion (or a complete abstract, if available) directly to the Program Committee by sending an email to Julie@iamse.org. The Program Committee will discuss all submissions and select those that are consistent with the mission of IAMSE. A full session proposal will be requested when appropriate. The deadline for submission of your ideas is July 29, 2011.

By suggesting new meeting topics you can help the members of the Program Committee to make sure that the meeting is directed toward YOUR needs. I’m looking forward to your input!

Last Chance to Make your Hotel Reservations - 15th Annual IAMSE Meeting

Dear Colleagues ...

As we are just a couple weeks away from the 15th Annual Meeting of IAMSE in St. Petersburg I wanted to remind you that the room block for the hotel is about to expire.

I strongly encourage you to make your reservations now as the hotel will no longer honor the highly reduced rate negotiated for this meeting after May 24th. I would also like to remind you to not use Internet sites such as Hotels.com, Expedia.com etc. to make your reservations. IAMSE will not benefit from rooms booked under this method and we will be unable to assist you if a problem should develop regarding your reservation.

Please contact julie@iamse.org is you need any assistance in booking your room or submitting your conference registration.

I am looking forward to seeing you in St. Petersburg!

15th Annual IAMSE Meeting - Saturday Session Highlights

Dear Colleagues,

While the official opening for the 15th Annual IAMSE Meeting begins at 6:30 pm on Saturday, June 18th, there will be plenty of opportunities for professional development during the day!

On Saturday morning there will be 3 day-long faculty development sessions offered:

• Educational Scholarship 101: Taking Your Teaching to Publication
• Comprehensive Curriculum Evaluation Design
• Simulation: Demonstrating the Clinical Relevance of the Basic Sciences

All three of which are eligible to be used towards the IAMSE Medical Educator Fellowship program. Details of this program can be found here - http://iamse.org/fellowship.htm

15th Annual IAMSE Meeting - Essential Skills in Medical Education Course

Essential Skills in Medical Education (ESME) Course

IAMSE Meeting: June 17-21, 2011

The concept of a course covering the essential skills in medical education built around an educational conference including pre- and post-conference workshops has proved popular. Successful courses have now been run since 2005 in Europe, Asia, Africa and North America. In collaboration with IAMSE, AMEE is pleased to offer the ESME course at the IAMSE 2011 Meeting in St Petersburg.

With the increasing professionalisation of medical education, the need for teachers in the healthcare professions to have training in teaching is widely recognized. Whilst many institutions worldwide offer Diploma and Masters courses in medical education, there is a lack of accredited basic level courses. The ESME Programme has been designed to meet the need for an entry level teaching qualification. ESME will be of particular interest to teachers who are engaging with medical education for the first time, or who have been given some new responsibilities or assignment relating to teaching. Others are finding the ESME Programme useful as a refresher course or update. The course at the IAMSE Meeting is designed to be specifically relevant to medical science educators.

The ESME Programme is accredited by AMEE and approved by an international Advisory Board. It has been designed around a set of competencies that all practising teachers should possess. These include: Effective Teaching, Skilled Educational Planning and Informed Assessment and Evaluation.

For additional information regarding this course or the other sessions offered during the 15th Annual IAMSE Meeting, please go to: http://www.iamseconference.org

I look forwward to seeing you in St. Petersburg!

15th Annual IAMSE Meeting Reminders!

Dear Colleagues,

As you are preparing to register for the 15th Annual IAMSE meeting we would like to remind you that April 15th is the Early Bird Registration Deadline. You will save $100 on your registration costs by submitting now!

All IAMSE attendees and exhibitors are also encouraged to make hotel reservations by utilizing the official IAMSE hotel. We recognize that attendees have many options with area hotels and that you may be looking only at the per night cost in making your decision. However, we encourage you to take a few minutes to understand the importance of selecting an official IAMSE hotel and the other factors beyond the per night rate.

IAMSE has a long history of consistently fulfilling the minimum number of room nights to be sold according to our contracts with the hotels. However, with the current economic climate and outside competition it gets more difficult each year to assure these rooms will be used by the attendees and exhibitors.

What does this mean to you?

* When we are able to maintain a consistent history of hotel rooms sold, it helps us negotiate the lowest hotel rates possible for future IAMSE meetings.

* IAMSE earns credit for each room night utilized by an attendee or exhibitor when the reservation is at an official conference hotel. This credit helps to offset the rental costs of the hotel.

* Our hotels contracts protect you. Booking within the IAMSE hotel block gives us the opportunity, if the need does arise, to assist you with any hotel problem you may experience while at the meeting. When you choose other hotels we have no contacts or leverage to help rectify a problem or inconvenience that you may have encountered.

Please do not hesitate to contact us if there is anything we can do to help assist you with the registration process!

Additional information regarding the conference details, registration and hotel information can be found at http://www.iamseconference.org

I look forward to seeing you in St. Petersburg, June 18-21st

15th Annual IAMSE Meeting - Science Education in a Medical Curriculum: Teaching Science to Training Scientists?

Plenary Session Highlight!

Science Education in a Medical Curriculum: Teaching Science or Training Scientists?

Presented by: Friedo Dekker, Leiden University Medical Center, The Netherlands

Medical students deserve proper education in which science plays a central role. Traditionally basic sciences like anatomy, physiology, and pathology are a firm basis of a medical curriculum, with a growing share of a molecular approach. However, to what extent does this teaching contribute to scientific thinking in medical students? Do we really train scientists? Should we train scientists among these students anyway? In this presentation we will explore different aims and means of scientific education. Some Dutch experiences will be shared, and results in terms of scientific output of medical students will be presented.

March 1st is the submission deadline for the Call for Poster Abstracts for the 15th Annual IAMSE Meeting. We encourage you to submit your abstract illustrating how your institution is addressing this topic. We offer a special discounted rate for student participation at the meeting.

For additional details regarding abstract submission, meeting registration or session topics, please visit the website at http://www.iamseconference.org
